Ubuntu Lucid Lynx on HP Pavilion ze4900
My HP Pavilion ze4900 ran under WinXP without problems, however as time goes by, it became slower and slower. Instead of re-installing Windows I decided to shrink the WinXP partition and have Ubuntu as dual boot.
First exercise was shrinking the WinXP partition. In order to do so the hard drive had to be defragmented to the brim. Best utility to do so is the defraggler.
After that I shrank the partition wit GParted. The manual from How-To Geek is very useful to do that. Other than described in the manual, however, my WinXP started without any errormessages after the shrinking process. That’s probably because it is XP and not Vista .
This installed the Ubuntu system, however it still refused to boot, like on the live CD. It did boot, however, using the safe mode. Using the safe mode Ubuntu creates another xorg.conf, called xorg.conf.protected. In order to be able to at least boot, I copied xorg.conf.protected to xorg.conf:
